New student apartments at Shorter named after president

ROME — The Shorter College Board of Trustees voted Oct. 26 to name the college’s new student apartment building Newman Hall in honor of the college’s president, Harold E. Newman.

Shorter began construction on the three-story, apartment-style building in March and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 20. The building provides living space for 46 students. The estimated cost of constructing and furnishing the building was $2.644 million, approximately $1.4 million of which was provided by the Georgia Baptist Convention.

Dr. Newman has served as the college’s president since January 2006. Previously he served as Shorter’s provost for 20 years.
