Nathan Cook Byrd, Jr., 81, died June 19 after a bout with malignant Mesothelioma.

Byrd was prominent in SBC campus ministry, having served for 10 years at the University of Virginia and 23 years at Georgia Southern University before retiring from the GBC. He was the father of Nathan Byrd III of Athens, campus minister at the University of Georgia.

A native of Charleston, S.C., Byrd attended Brewton Parker College and graduated from Mercer University. He received bachelor of divinity and master of theology degrees from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

Byrd, a member of Vineville Church, pastored churches in South Carolina and Georgia.

Byrd is survived by his wife of 47 years, Frieda Headley Byrd; his children, Gyni Wood of Macon; Annette Wilson of Richmond, Va.; Nathan Byrd III of Athens; Hazel Reddick of Augusta; Paul Byrd of Hoover, Ala.; one brother, Clarence; and ten grandchildren.
