Funeral services for Jimmy Byars, pastor of Southside Baptist Church in Brunswick, were held Dec. 2 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
Byars, 50, had been missing for nine days when his body was found in the Altamaha River. He presumably drowned while fishing.
A native of Alma, Byars had been at Southside since August. Prior to that he served as pastor at Everett Baptist Church for 13 years.
He is survived by his wife Lynn, daughter Jamie, and son Scott, all of Mt. Pleasant; brother Gary, of Alma; sisters Judy Floyd, of Everett City, and Terri Dyson, of Waycross; and step-mother Betty Byars, of Brunswick.
Retired Georgia Baptist pastor Bob Atkins, Jr., passed away at Vista Care Hospice in Columbus Nov. 15. He was 71.
A native of Rome, Atkins served at churches in Albany, Bainbridge, Newnan, Rome, Thomaston, Thomasville, and Valdosta. He served as interim pastor at two churches in LaGrange. He also pastored churches in the Alabama towns of Headland and Society Hill.
Atkins was preceded in death by a brother, David. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Eloise R. Atkins, originally of Cairo; two sons, Reginald Atkins of Phenix City, Ala., and Bobby Ray Atkins of Columbus; a sister, Imogene Smith of Cedartown; and five grandchildren.
