Headed for a perfect storm

President Obama has been in office for just over three weeks and we are already beginning to see the kind of “change” his administration is orchestrating.

One of the first things Mr. Obama did was reaffirm his support for abortion rights on the 36th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. In fact, he released a statement Jan. 22 announcing that he continues to be “committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.”

Then on Jan. 26 the president signed a document to rescind George W. Bush’s Mexico City Policy, a policy that had blocked funding for international organizations that practiced or promoted abortions worldwide. The new president’s signature will ensure that American taxpayers will fund abortions in the developing world – in countries that are historically and deeply pro-life.

While the president was pushing his pro-choice agenda, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave approval to a biotechnical company for clinical trials using embryonic stem cells in human beings.

Ben Mitchell, a professor of bioethics and contemporary culture at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in suburban Chicago, explained that this approval involves purposefully killing living human beings in order to test medical treatments for other human beings.

Then the new president appointed Timothy Geithner, who failed to pay $34,000 in taxes between 2001 and 2004, as the Secretary of the Treasury. Obama’s first choice for this position, Bill Richardson, withdrew because he was under federal investigation.

Obama then selected Tom Daschle to head the Department of Health and Human Services and Nancy Killifer to become his Chief Performance Officer. Both nominees withdrew amid revelations that they did not pay their taxes. Hilda Solis was nominated as the Secretary of Labor even though her husband had unpaid tax liens on his California auto repair business.

Also, in his first week as president Mr. Obama gave his first full-length sit down interview to the Saudi-financed Al-Arabiya satellite news channel. Lest you become unduly critical of Mr. Obama, Al-Arabiya is known for its pro-American bias and easy questions to American officials. Former President Bush, Vice-President Cheney, Secretary Rice, and General Petraeus have also appeared on the Al-Arabiya news channel.

Obama told the Muslim world, “Americans are not your enemy.” He indicated that he hoped the same respect and partnership America had with the Muslim world as recently as 20 or 30 years ago can be restored. Hopefully, the president does not have an unrealistic, Pollyannaish attitude toward the Muslim world.

The truth is that 30 years ago American diplomats were being held hostage in Iran, Saddam Hussein was preparing to invade Iran, Saudi Arabia was under siege by Muslim militants, Soviet troops were seeking to annex Afghanistan, and Syrian troops were preparing to invade Lebanon. Since then things have only gotten worse, because Muslim aggression has become more pronounced. stated, “Casting himself in the role of a ‘bridge’ between the U.S. and the Muslim world and dreaming of a return to an illusionary past, Obama appeared unsure of his own identity and confused about the role that America should play in global politics.”

In his first week on the job the president also signed an executive order that calls for a task force to look at closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay within a year. Robert Gibbs, Obama’s press secretary, explained, “The president believes that there is no more important job that he has than to keep the American people safe” and according to Gibbs, closing the facility will “… enhance the security of the American people.”

A Fox News Poll disclosed that 63 percent of those surveyed think it is a bad idea to close the Guantanamo Bay facility and only 12 percent think closing Gitmo will make the United States safer.

Senator Joe Lieberman said, “I understand the symbolic significance of closing Guantanamo, but where do we put the detainees that everyone would agree cannot be released because they are dangerous Islamist extremists who will return to the battlefield and end up killing Americans and others?”

On another front, while the president was scolding Wall Street bankers who received millions of dollars in bonuses last year at the same time some of their banks were failing, Congress gave each member of their body a $98,000 stipend.

Of course, the most publicized issue during the first days of Obama’s administration was the so-called economic stimulus package. The Wall Street Journal editorialized, “This is supposed to be a new era of bipartisanship, but the bill was written based on the wish list of every living – or dead – Democratic interest group.”

Economists have calculated that the stimulus package will increase the taxes of every person in America by $3,333 and increase each individual’s debt to a total of $38,000.

As families carefully spend their dollars, the presses are running around the clock to print more money for government agencies that abuse what they already have. There also seems to be some disturbing connections between the architects of the bill and the beneficiaries of the stimulus. Newspapers revealed that the primary crafter of the bill, Representative David Obey (D-Wis.), had a vested interest in the massive $2 billion earmark for national parks. His son, Craig Obey, happens to be the chief lobbyist for the National Park Service.

Among those included in the stimulus package is ACORN, the ultra-left-wing group that has been accused of voter fraud and funneling millions of dollars in taxpayers’ money into liberal political activism.

The Wall Street Journal has reported “some $252 billion is for income transfer payments – that is not investments that arguably help everyone, but cash or benefits to individuals for doing nothing at all. There’s $81 billion for Medicaid, $36 billion for expanded unemployment benefits, $20 billion for the earned income credit for people who don’t pay income tax.

“While some of that may be justified to help poorer Americans ride out the recession, they aren’t job creators.”

It appears that our government is moving ever closer to socialism. This stimulus package, the move toward universal health care, and the president’s desire to “redistribute the wealth” seems to be a carefully orchestrated move toward a welfare state.

We need to remember the words of Adrian Rogers, who said, “You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody that the government does not first take from somebody else.

“When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that, my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

I am not sure what is happening in America, but there is something significant taking place. It is more than an economic crisis, an unemployment crisis, and a political crisis. It is based on selfish objectives and a flagrant disregard for the principles upon which this nation was founded.

I smell something ominous. Something of historical proportions is developing that may take us down a path from which there is no return.

A perfect storm is brewing and conditions for this storm began to take shape before the current president took his oath of office. However, the RPMs increased substantially in January. Our problems are too complex and far-reaching for human solutions. Our hope is in Christ alone. We desperately need His intervention in the White House, the State House, the Courthouse, the schoolhouse, the church house, my house, and your house.
