What's the point?

Was the picture of Miss Prejean in The Christian Index (May 22, page 18) appropriate for publication? I say not.

It was surprising to find a tabloid type photograph of that kind in the newspaper. It saddened my heart to find such a display of worldliness coming to my home in the name of Christ. Need it to be pointed out that beauty pageants are inherently of the flesh? Romans 8:8 states “So then, they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”

Do Christians face encounters generated by the world, flesh, and the devil daily? Of course they do. The flesh is exposed and glorified on every hand. How much more careful should those in leadership be than to give place to this trend within our very own Southern Baptist circle? Am I not preaching to the choir on this issue?

Just because Miss Prejean is for traditional marriage does not mean she should be exalted as if she were a model of Christian virtue. Adults and children alike could get the idea that Southern Baptists will endorse anyone that may have only one moral issue correct. No matter that they parade almost naked in front of prime time television.

Would God’s blessing be on her pursuit? I say no, again! The Lord says in I Timothy 2:8-9 that we are to shun worldliness and a woman’s beauty is not in the outward adorning.

Our church (Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta) recently had a woman’s meeting on modesty. The ladies were reminded of the basics in dressing. A good guideline is not too short or not too revealing, or too tight and no cleavage. Miss Prejean fails in all areas by these standards. Are we not as Christians to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to the Lord?

It is my hope that The Christian Index will apologize for not being more conservative in what is shown in their photographs. Miss Prejean was given more than an honorable mention in a lengthy article. Her picture was unnecessary for clarity.

The objectionable picture seemed to be used to appeal to the lust of the eye with her plunging neckline and skin-tight dress.
