Longtime evangelist Melvin Wise died Nov. 4. He was 82.

A native of Turner County, Wise graduated from Bob Jones University and studied at the University of Georgia and Southeastern Seminary. After 13 years as a pastor, he entered full-time vocational evangelism and spent the next 60 years speaking at more than 900 revivals. As pastor at Talmadge Heights Baptist Church in Athens, he wrote the religious column “Think on These Things” in the Athens Banner Herald for nearly six years.

In addition to serving as vice president of the Georgia Baptist Convention, Wise held several leadership posts in the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists. He was elected the first president of the Conference of Georgia Baptist Evangelists. At the time of his death he was a member of Briarlake Baptist Church in Decatur

Wise is survived by his wife of 57 years Emily Benson Wise, sons Paul and Jim, daughter Melanie, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
