LaVerne Butler, a leader in Kentucky during the Southern Baptist Conservative Resurgence and the former president of Mid-Continent University, died Dec. 16. He was 84.

Butler served as pastor of Ninth and O Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., from 1969-88 and as president of Mid-Continent from 1988-97. During the 1970s and ‘80s, thousands in the convention heard Butler’s message, “Will the Real Southern Baptist Please Stand Up,” in which he called on Southern Baptists to stand up for biblical orthodoxy.

 

Morgan Patterson, retired dean of academic affairs at Golden Gate Seminary, died of cancer at his home Nov. 19. He was 85.

Patterson served at Golden Gate from 1976-84 then as president of Georgetown College in Kentucky 1984-91. In retirement he was a visiting professor of church history at Midwestern Seminary, Louisiana College, Golden Gate Seminary and New Orleans Seminary. He also taught at Oklahoma Baptist University.

 

Renowned theologian Roger Nicole, a leading light on the doctrines of inerrancy and Christ’s atonement, died Dec. 11, a day after his 95th birthday.

He was a founding member of the Evangelical Theological Society, the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy and Christians for Biblical Equality.
