Resolution of Support for Our Georgia Baptist Convention

Missionaries and Support Staff

Presented by R.Jim Duggan, pastor, First Baptist of Ty Ty

Whereas the Bible encourages us to remember those who labor among us and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake, and

Whereas our divinely-called state missionaries and support staff serve the Lord with integrity and sacrificially serve our Georgia Baptist churches for the sake of the Gospel; and

Whereas our convention is blessed by a gifted and godly group of men and women who serve Christ and His Kingdom selflessly and tirelessly,

Be it therefore resolved, that we, the messengers of the Georgia Baptist Convention meeting November 15, 2012, affirm our love, appreciation, and support of Dr. J. Robert White, and all of the missionaries and employees that serve the Lord through the Georgia Baptist Convention; and

Be it finally resolved that we pledge to pray regularly for them and joyfully to assist them in any way they may need us.

Resolution On Support of Shorter University

Submitted by Ben Smith, pastor, First Baptist of Adel

Whereas, Shorter University is an official and well-loved entity affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention, proudly and openly proclaiming in traditional signage and its web presence that it is “A Georgia Baptist Institution” and affirming on its web page “its affiliation with and commitment to the Georgia Baptist Convention;” and

Whereas, Shorter University exists for the stated purpose of “transforming lives through Christ;” and

Whereas, Shorter University unapologetically identifies itself as “a Christ-centered liberal arts university dedicated to academic excellence within the context of a biblical worldview” and that “[a]s a Christian university, Shorter is committed to keeping an emphasis upon a biblically sound, integrated, faith-based education that promotes a zeal for academic, spiritual, and professional growth” (source: www.shorter.edu); and

Whereas, The administration and trustees of the school have made concerted efforts in recent years to strengthen the school’s connection with and accountability to the churches of the Georgia Baptist Convention; and

Whereas, An integral part of that effort includes the adoption of a recent “Personal Lifestyle Statement” by the university’s board of trustees; and

Whereas, This same “Personal Lifestyle Statement” has been the source of intense criticism from various news outlets and advocacy groups whose views are contrary to a Bibliocentric worldview; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the messengers to the Georgia Baptist Convention meeting in Lawrenceville, Georgia on November 14-15, 2011 do wholeheartedly and unashamedly express our support for Shorter University, her new president, Dr. Don Dowless, the board of trustees, Joe Harris, current chairman, and Dr. Nelson Price who recently served as chairman of the board of trustees at Shorter; and be it further

Resolved, That we affirm the university’s “Personal Lifestyle Statement” is consistent with the teachings of Scripture and “The Baptist Faith and Message,” the official doctrinal statement of the Georgia Baptist Convention; and be it further

Resolved, That we express our deepest gratitude to President Dowless, the administration, and the board of trustees for this recent action; and be it further

Resolved, That the messengers to this convention commit to pray for the school, and to openly express our support for Shorter’s actions; and be it further

Resolved, That we thank the recent nominating committees of this convention for nominating Bible-believing, Christ-honoring Georgia Baptists to the board of trustees at Shorter; and be it finally

Resolved, That the messengers to this convention give thanks to God for the recent directions and decisions of Shorter University and its board of trustees.
