MOUNT VERNON — Acknowledging the recent vote by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to remove Brewton-Parker College from membership, leaders at the south Georgia Baptist college are calling on supporters to acknowledge the institution’s importance.
That gathering will take place July 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Gates Hall on the BPC campus in Mount Vernon.
“Brewton-Parker College … has been an icon of southeast Georgia for well over a century,” begins a statement on the school’s website, bpc.edu. “Few people living in the region remain unaffected by this Georgia Baptist institution. Tens of thousands of college graduates have literally served all over the globe as pastors, missionaries, church-planters, teachers, scholars, business owners, farmers, lawyers, you name it.
“Our past is glorious because our God is glorious,” it continues. “Our future will be no less glorious because our God is no less glorious!”
Three specific reasons were cited by the statement for the school’s importance: BPC’s stance on educating through the lens of a Christian worldview; the economic impact of the college on the region; and the large number of lives impacted through the student body.
“We are in the middle of a war for the hearts and minds of this generation,” said Bucky Kennedy, pastor of First Baptist Church in Vidalia and chairman of the BPC Board of Trustees. “I look at Brewton Parker College and our two other schools as military training facilities. Under the leadership of Dr. Ergun Caner I have seen the clear and intentional teaching of a biblical worldview, the importance of chapel as the weekly rallying point for both students and faculty, and the emphasis of evangelism, missions, and discipleship become more than words but a way of life.
“Brewton Parker College gives Georgia Baptists a strong and viable presence in south Georgia for the equipping and encouragement of Georgia’s rural communities and churches.”
